The Indian National Congress on Thursday announced senior leader V. D. Satheesan as the new Chief Minister of Kerala, ten days after the state assembly election results were declared.
The 61-year-old leader, who represents the Paravur assembly constituency, was chosen after extensive consultations within the party leadership.
Addressing a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram, Congress leader Deepa Dasmunshi said a meeting of party leaders was held on May 7, following which discussions took place with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi before finalising Satheesan’s name.
After being named Chief Minister, V. D. Satheesan said he viewed the responsibility as a blessing rather than a personal achievement.
“I consider this position not a personal achievement but a divine blessing,” Satheesan said.
He also stated that he would work collectively with senior party leaders, including K. C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala, while leading the new government.
The announcement formally ends days of speculation within the Congress party regarding the leadership of the new Kerala government.
