Vaishali Rameshbabu Wins FIDE Women’s Candidates 2026

Indian Grandmaster Vaishali Rameshbabu created history by winning the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament 2026, finishing at the top of the standings after the final round held at the Cap St. George Hotel on April 15.

Playing with the white pieces, the 24-year-old defeated experienced Russian Grandmaster Kateryna Lagno in the decisive final round. With this achievement, Vaishali became the first Indian woman to win the prestigious Candidates Tournament. She will now challenge reigning world champion Ju Wenjun of China for the Women’s World Chess Championship title.

Dominant Performance from the Opening

In the final game, Lagno opted for the Sicilian Defense, specifically the Dragon Variation, aiming to safeguard her king while enabling long-range activity for her bishop. Vaishali responded with the aggressive Yugoslav Attack, launching an early kingside offensive and quickly seizing control of the position.

Vaishali maintained a clear advantage up to the 16th move and calmly capitalized on her opponent’s inaccuracies. Demonstrating excellent composure and technique, she converted her advantage, forcing Lagno to resign on the 48th move.

Title Secured After Final-Round Drama

Heading into the last round, Vaishali was tied at 7.5 points with Kazakhstan’s Bibisara Asaubayeva. However, Asaubayeva was held to a draw by India’s Divya Deshmukh, allowing Vaishali to take the sole lead and clinch the championship.

Remarkable Comeback After Slow Start

Vaishali’s triumph is even more impressive considering her challenging start to the tournament. Entering the event as the lowest-rated player, she drew her first four games and lost the fifth. Undeterred, she staged a remarkable comeback with a series of consistent performances, ultimately securing the historic title.

Significance of the Victory

  • Historic Milestone: First Indian woman to win the Women’s Candidates Tournament.
  • World Championship Opportunity: Earns the right to challenge Ju Wenjun for the world title.
  • Inspiring Comeback: Demonstrates resilience after an initially slow start.
  • Boost for Indian Chess: Adds to India’s growing prominence in global chess.
