A pair of devastating earthquakes struck Venezuela within a span of just one minute on Wednesday evening, triggering massive destruction across the South American nation. The powerful tremors, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, have left dozens dead and hundreds injured, while fears remain that the final death toll could rise sharply.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS) the earthquakes struck at 6:34 pm and 6:35 pm local time. In India, the tremors were felt at approximately 3:34 am and 3:35 am on Thursday.

Buildings Collapse Across Venezuela
The epicentres of both quakes were located nearly 290 kilometres west of Caracas, the capital city. Several cities reported severe structural damage as residential and commercial buildings either collapsed or tilted dangerously.
Authorities confirmed that a section of the roof at Caracas International Airport caved in, sending thick clouds of dust into the air and creating panic among travellers.
Strongest Earthquake to Hit Venezuela in 126 Years
Officials have described the disaster as the most powerful earthquake to strike Venezuela in more than a century. The last earthquake of similar intensity occurred in 1900, when a magnitude 7.7 quake hit the country.
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared a nationwide emergency following the disaster. So far, at least 32 deaths have been officially confirmed, while more than 700 people have sustained injuries. Search and rescue teams are continuing operations in several affected regions.
USGS Warns of Heavy Casualties
The USGS has issued a concerning assessment, estimating a 44 percent probability that fatalities could exceed 10,000. The agency also indicated a 30 percent chance that the death toll may cross 100,000 if damage proves extensive.
Seismologists warned that strong aftershocks are likely in the coming days, posing additional risks to weakened structures.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and conveyed India's support to Venezuela during this difficult period.
In a message posted on social media, Modi said India stands in solidarity with the people of Venezuela and is prepared to provide all possible assistance if required.
Why a 7.5 Magnitude Earthquake Is Extremely Dangerous
Scientists explain that each increase in earthquake magnitude represents a significant rise in released energy. A magnitude 7.5 earthquake releases nearly 32 times more energy than a magnitude 6.5 quake.
As a result, powerful earthquakes can severely damage buildings, roads, bridges and other infrastructure, especially in densely populated urban areas.
The USGS states that earthquakes above magnitude 7.0 occur globally around 10 to 20 times each year. However, when such quakes strike near major population centres, the consequences can be catastrophic.
Authorities have urged residents to remain outdoors and avoid entering damaged buildings due to the continuing threat of aftershocks.
