Vijay-Led TVK Government Wins Trust Vote In Tamil Nadu Assembly

The government led by Vijay successfully passed the floor test in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, securing a comfortable majority during the confidence vote.

A total of 172 MLAs participated in the voting process, out of which the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam received support from 144 legislators.

In the 234-member Assembly, a simple majority requires the backing of at least 118 MLAs.

Vijay had won both the Trichy East and Perambur Assembly constituencies during the elections. After becoming Chief Minister, he resigned from the Perambur seat.

Meanwhile, Tirupattur MLA Srinivasa Sethupathi was reportedly unable to cast his vote because a related matter concerning his membership remains pending before the Madras High Court.

As a result, the effective strength of the House was reduced to 232 members during the confidence motion.

Rebel AIADMK MLAs Back TVK Government

The Vijay-led government received crucial support from 25 rebel MLAs belonging to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. Rebel legislators from the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, IUML and AMMK also extended support to the government.

The confidence motion faced opposition from 22 MLAs, all belonging to the remaining AIADMK faction.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which has 59 MLAs in the Assembly, staged a walkout during the proceedings.

Five legislators — including four from the PMK and one from the BJP — abstained from voting, while the Speaker also refrained from participating in the vote.

AIADMK Faces Internal Split

The floor test has reportedly deepened divisions within the AIADMK, leading to a split between factions led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami and C. V. Shanmugam.

Opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin questioned Vijay’s meetings with rebel AIADMK legislators.

He alleged that the meetings appeared more like political bargaining than efforts toward political change and accused the new government of focusing on publicity rather than governance.

Responding to the criticism, Chief Minister Vijay said his government would function in a secular and transparent manner. He asserted that his administration would move “at the speed of a horse” in delivering governance and would not engage in horse-trading politics.
