Tripura AIDS Control Society and National Seva Project Cell jointly organized the Statewide Red Run Marathon competition at Umakanta School Ground on Friday.
Sports Minister Tinku Roy inaugurated the program on this day.
For the first time in the state, the competition was held in three categories.
Not only women and men, but third gender people also participated in this day’s competition.
Selected contestants from eight districts participated in the marathon race.
At the end of the competition, Minister Roy handed over the prizes to the winners.
Notably spread of HIV infection through sexual transmission has reduced to below 2% in Tripura, but IDU has climbed to 95% among students between the 14 to 20 age group in the last three years.
According to Sankalak’s (annual report of NACO) latest edition, AIDS patients have increased about 300% in Tripura over the decade.
It said ID users are 43 times of the overall adult HIV prevalence, which continued to be high in the northeastern states, especially Mizoram, Nagaland and Manipur.
According to the experts the trend shows an pandemic indication, which needs to be addressed through extensive counselling and mass testing among the vulnerable age group but due to the provision of prior consent of the individual, the entire process has been facing hindrance.
