On May 19, 1961, 11 Bengalis had to be martyred for the Bengali language at the Silchar railway station.
A tribute program was organized in front of the Amara Bengali Tripura State Office on Friday morning to pay respect to them.
State secretary of the party Gauranga Rudrapal was present in the program. The martyrs were paid tribute by placing wreaths.
Later, Rudrapal said that this day is observed every year to protect the dignity of Bengali language by paying respect to the martyrs. At that time Assam tried to force the local language on the Bengalis. 11 martyrs organized the movement to protect the rights of Bengali language at that time. Then 11 Bengalis were martyred indiscriminately by the police.
