India is preparing to provide about one lakh workers to Taiwan. For this, the agreement is expected to be signed between the two countries in early December 2023.
This decision is being taken because a large population of Taiwan is going to be elderly and India has a very large population of youth who need jobs, but this decision of India is likely to anger China, who India opposes any kind of official exchanges with Taiwan, while India is trying to build closer economic ties with Taiwan through a labor-related agreement.
The officials said on the condition of anonymity that Taiwan can hire more than one lakh Indians to work in hospitals, but this is still being discussed internally.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi told reporters on Thursday that the India-Taiwan jobs agreement is now in the final stages of negotiations. Taiwan’s Labor Ministry did not comment specifically on the agreement when contacted by Bloomberg News, but said it welcomed cooperation from countries that would provide labor for our people. Taiwan will become a ‘super aged’ country by 2025, with elderly people estimated to make up more than a fifth of the population.
The unemployment rate there has fallen to its lowest level since 2000. In such a situation, the Taiwanese government needs workers to keep its $790 billion economy running.
Taiwan is also offering good salaries and insurance policies to Indian workers.
On the other hand, India has become the most populous country in the world this year by overtaking China.
So far, the Government of India has signed employment agreements with 13 countries including Japan, France and the UK.
Similar arrangements are under discussion with the Netherlands, Greece, Denmark and Switzerland. Let us tell you that China claims its occupation of Taiwan. In a way, Taiwan is adjacent to China via sea and is adjacent to India via the Himalayas.
It has also been India’s top source of imports for the last two decades. At the same time, relations between India and China are tense after the border skirmish in the year 2020, which is the worst case so far in 4 decades.
Both countries have since moved thousands of troops, artillery guns and tanks to the Himalayan region. Now the issue of Taiwan is going to arise.
