Arshiya Das have been awarded the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, she is the first and the only girl Chess Player from North East India. She has won Gold in International as well as National Chess Championships also. The programme of conferring the award , generally held in ‘Rashtrapati Bhawan‘ on the eve of republic day annually enabling the awardees to witness the republic day programme, was announced and given away online through a video conference today. Arshiya accompanied by her father Purnendu Das and mother Arnisha Das as well as the DM (west) Shailesh Kumar Yadav attended the programme in DM office and listened to the prime minister’s speech. The actual awards will be delivered at her home by the concerned department of the government of India. This mode of online awarding had become unavoidable because of the ongoing COVID pandemic. Arshiya’s father Purnendu Das said that this year altogether 32 children have been nominated for the ‘Pradhan Mantri Bal Puraskar’ award and three have been conferred the prestigious award from northeast including one each from Assam and Manipur. These awards are given for various categories like sports, cultural activities, bravery, innovation, music etc.
Arshiya has emerged as a shining star in the arena of national womens chess by becoming national school champion in the year 2019 at Raipur in Chhattishgarh and winning a gold and bronze medal in the Asian school chess championship held in Ujbekistan in the same year. Besides, she represented India in two age-group world championship-one in Spain where she secured the 13th position and another world championship held online from Georgia in the Caucasus where she could secure 25th position. Since the COVID pandemic marred all sports programmes last year the world championship had to be held online .
