Assam: Don’t want my son to step into politics, says Himanta Biswa Sarma

BJP’s strongman in Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma is a first-generation politician but unlike many in the fraternity, he is not keen on seeing his son, Nandil, a first time-voter this election, to follow in his footsteps. Sarma’s political journey in a way started when he was in his teens during the anti-foreigner’s movement when he mingled with university-level Aasu leaders likes of Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and Bhrigu Kumar Phukan. His rise from student politics to electoral politics has inspired many young minds. But Sarma has different plans for his son. “He is just 18. It is good for him he stays away from politics as much as possible,” he said. “I do not want my son to step into in this world… the challenges that we have faced, I don’t think they’ll be able to face such challenges,” Sarma said. He added that his son will join a law university in the next few months. Nandil is also clear. “I don’t have plans (to join politics).”
