“Recently it has been noticed that there is a publicity that property tax has been increased by AMC and confusion is being created in this regard. But regrettably half of the citizens do not pay taxes. But everyone takes the service. Only 30 percent of urban dwellers pay taxes”.
Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation AMC Dipak Majumder said this in a press conference at AMC conference hall on Monday.
The mayor said that notices have been issued through GIS system to those who have not paid property tax for a long time. Along with the whole of India, Agartala Municipal Corporation will also collect property tax through GIS system.
Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Sahar has extended the deadline by one more month to those whose houses have been served notices through GIS system so as not to disturb the joy of citizens during the upcoming Durga Puja. He said, there was no provision for tax hike in this year’s budget. Taxes are only collected from those who do not pay taxes. Corporations have been given the resources to run themselves as per the directives of the Central Government throughout the country. So the corporation wants to increase its own money. In this case, the tax is not increased but only collected from those who do not pay tax. Mayor Deepak Majumder made this clear.
The mayor also said that in this case, the Chief Minister had informed that now it is the festival month to reduce the pressure on the people. He asked to increase the deadline for paying this tax. Accordingly, the Municipal Corporation has decided to extend the time limit by one month for those who were paying taxes with wrong information. October 5 was the actual tax payment time. Now it has been increased to 5 November. During this period the actual tax money has to be paid to the townspeople.
A meeting was held on this day to take various steps to keep the city traffic free in view of the upcoming Durga Puja. From senior police officers to representatives of the traffic department, the police administration, Various representatives of the district administration participated in the meeting.
Mayor Dipak Majumdar presided over this meeting. The mayor told reporters about the meeting that the corporation has noticed that some unscrupulous traders are illegally occupying various streets of Agartala city and trying to do business during the puja. As a result traffic is disrupted. People are also facing difficulties in movement. The Chief Minister has directed the Mayor to decongest the city before Puja. Aiming at that, Kaman Chowmuhani to Post Office Chowmuhani and Paradise Choumuhani to Battala were earlier vacated by the initiative of the corporation. Later they again started their business at that place. As a result, traffic jams have become a daily occurrence in the area.
