Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that in the absence of caste census the data for social justice programs is incomplete.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav welcomed this demand on Monday.
The second phase of caste census in Bihar started on Sunday. This will be completed in the next 6 to 8 months, that is, the caste census will be done before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
On the other hand Congress leader Rahul Gandhi while addressing targets PM Modi and said, “You talk about OBCs. Make that data public. Tell the country how many OBCs, Dalits and Adivasis are there in the country. If you don’t do this then this OBC There is an insult to Also remove the limit of 50 percent on reservation.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi raised this demand in Kolar, Karnataka.
Shortly after this, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote a letter to PM Modi and formally put the demand for caste census in front of the Government of India.
Tweeting the letter written to PM Modi, Kharge said, “The regular decennial census was to be done in 2021, but it has not been done. We demand that it be done immediately and the comprehensive caste census be made an integral part of it.” I suspect that the data for social justice programs is incomplete in the absence of caste census.”
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar did not delay in supporting the Congress leadership’s demand. Nitish Kumar said, “Census used to be done in the country in 10 years, but this time it has not happened. It has been 13 years. Next time when the central government does the census, it will be good to get the caste census done.”
The statements of Rahul Gandhi, Malikarjun Kharge and Nitish Kumar suggest that caste census at the national level could be an important election issue for the opposition parties in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
It is significant that so far at least 17 opposition parties have supported the demand for a caste census at the national level.
It is obvious that before the 2024 elections, the opposition parties can also mobilize at the national level on the issue of caste census.
