Former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has refused to accept the Padma Bhushan given to him by the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Center on the eve of Republic Day.
Bhattacharjee, a former member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), was the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 2002 to 2011.
“I don’t know anything about the Padma Bhushan award, nobody told me about it. Had I been awarded the Padma Bhushan, I would have declined it,” he said in a statement.
On Republic Day, people who have brought pride to the country in their field will be honored with Padma awards by the government. In this, four names have been selected for the Padma Vibhushan award.
General Bipin Rawat, who has shown indomitable courage many times in the defense of the country, will be awarded the Padma Vibhushan posthumously.
He died in an air crash in December last year. He was the country’s first Chief of Defense Staff at that time.
The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind has approved the conferment of 128 Padma Awards this year.
Former UP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh has also been awarded the Padma Vibhushan posthumously.
Apart from this, Congress leader Ghulam Nabin Azad has been honored with Padma Bhushan.
