Fake Marriage, Pregnant: 13 Years Jail For Sekerkot Youth

In a landmark judgment the additional district and session judge of West Tripura, Dhiman Debbarma pronounced a fraudulent youth Sanjib Paul of Sekerkote guilty of rape yesterday. Sanjib Paul had a love affair with a young girl of Amtoli area and established physical relation with the girl , as a result of which the girl gave birth to a male child. Promising to marry her in time cheat Sanjib Paul had backed out and even had disappeared on the appointed day of marriage by registration. Defying the entreaties of Sanjib and his relatives the girl gave birth to the child and became an unmarried mother without caring anything for social stigma.
The girl had filed a FIR against Sanjib with the Amtoli police station and sub-inspector Bidyalaxmi Debbarma investigated the matter and filed a charge-sheet in the year 2016. The trial took time to begin and the additional public prosecutor Arundam Deb fought the case on behalf of the government . After a long trial in the course of which 11 witnesses appeared in the case the additional district and session judge yesterday pronounced Sanjib Paul guilty of rape for physically enjoying the girl promising to marry her. The sentencing of guilty Sanjib is likely to be done today.
Speaking on the issue additional public prosecutor Arindam Deb described the judicial pronouncement as ‘landmark’ , adding that in most such cases the fraudulent youths escape or go scot free . But in the present case based on strong evidence the guilty has been punished and guilty Sanjib Paul is likely to be handed down either life imprisonment or at least seven years rigorous imprisonment.
