India Need To Be Alert Over The Political Tension In Bangladesh

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, has been protesting demanding the dissolution of parliament and fresh elections, but Begum Zia herself and her son Tariq Rahman are facing multiple trials on corruption charges.

As they been found guilty, so they cannot contest elections. So the big question is, what is the future of BNP after Begum Zia?

In fact, from 2001 to 2006, Begum Zia was in power and according to media reports, Bangladesh had become the champion of the world in terms of corruption.

The main reason for this was that both the sons of Begum Zia indulged in corruption in awarding every government contract and left no stone unturned in emptying the government treasury.

Even crores of dollars that came from abroad for children’s orphanage were also embezzled.

In October 2018, the Dhaka High Court sentenced Khaleda Zia to 10 years in a corruption case.

While in the same month, in another case related to the corruption of Zia Charitable Trust, she was sentenced to 7 years rigorous imprisonment.

She himself and son Tariq are the main accused in about a dozen other cases as well.

Notable that Tariq is the acting vice-president of the party and he is running the party only by staying in London.

Political analysts of Bangladesh believe that as per the law, both mother and son cannot contest elections, so instead of preparing to enter the electoral arena, they have taken the path of violent demonstrations by taking it out on the streets, so that at first they can remove the elected government.

According to famous political researcher Ajay Das Gupta, their game-plan is very clear. By showing their strength, they want to influence the judiciary by toppling the Sheikh Hasina government, so that it withdraws all the decisions given against them.

This is the reason why on December 9 last month, Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party shook the chair of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after many years by mobilizing a crowd of lakhs of people.

In the midst of this tense situation arising in Bangladesh, diplomatic experts have also advised India to remain alert.

Significantly, Sheikh Hasina has to face such power of the opposition after almost 13 years.

Khaleda Zia has done this massive demonstration at a time when the condition of Bangladesh’s economy is continuously deteriorating.

Due to the Russia-Ukraine war, oil prices have increased significantly. Not only this, the prices of goods used in everyday life have also increased a lot. This is the reason why protesters from all over the country had joined the BNP protest.

According to the experts, for the first time after the year 2009, Sheikh Hasina has been seen coming on the backfoot. That is because Khaleda Zia has made a direct attack on Sheikh Hasina, making inflation and election-rigging a big issue.

However, their real aim is to pressurize them to withdraw the cases filed against them.
