The press council of India (PCI),highest appellate body of media’s complaints and grievances , has taken cognizance of the complaint filed by the Assembly of Journalists (AOJ), apex media body of Tripura, regarding the chief minister’s intimidatory speech against media on 11th September. The Press Council has asked the leader of AOJ to furnish a video clip of chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb’s speech at Sabroom on 11th September, 2020 wherein he had threatened to see the media claiming that he never forgets and he will keep in mind what the media was doing in coverage of COVID crisis. Besides, the chief minister had got a circular issued barring anyone in the government except seniormost and authorized officials from speaking to the media. The AOJ organized a series of programmes including a state convention on December 16, 2020 to focus on the issues and highlight the persecution the media is facing in Tripura. The complaint had been filed earlier and recently the press council has addressed a letter to the president of the AOJ and editor of ‘Syandan Patrika’ Subal Kumar Dey asking for video clip of chief minister’s speech and copy of the circular barring officials from speaking to media. This issue will be discussed in a meeting of AOJ.
