Release Of 11 Rape Convicts: SC Dismisses Bilkis Bano’s Review Plea

Bilkis Bano has got a big blow from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has dismissed the review petition of Bilkis Bano.

In this petition, Bilkis Bano opposed the release of her convicts.

Bano, in her petition, had challenged the early release of 11 people convicted for gang-raping her in 2002 and killing her family members.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had refused an early hearing on this petition. Advocate Shobha Gupta, appearing for Bilkis Bano, urged a bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha that another bench needs to be constituted to hear the matter.

To which CJI Chandrachud said, “The writ petition will be listed. Please do not mention the same thing again and again.”

Bilkis Bano was gang-raped and seven of her family members were murdered during the riots that followed the Godhra train burning in 2002.

Bano was 21 years old at the time of the incident and was five months pregnant.

On January 21, 2008, a special CBI court convicted 11 people and sentenced them to life imprisonment.

On August 15 this year, the Gujarat government had released all the convicts from jail.

The Gujarat government commuted all life sentences to 14 years under the 1992 rules.

Earlier, the convicts had first approached the Bombay High Court against the sentence, but the High Court rejected the plea of the convicts.

Then all of them went to the Supreme Court, there also their petition was rejected. In the review petition filed on behalf of Bilkis Bano, it has been said that when the trial was held in Maharashtra, then the rules should also be applicable there and not of Gujarat.
