Shortly after Kapil Gurjar, the man who fired shots in the air at south Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh area during the CAA protest earlier this year, joined the BJP, his membership application was cancelled. BJP Ghaziabad president Sanjeev Sharma said that they were not aware of Gurjar”s firing incident at Shaheen Bagh. “Kapil Gurjar was part of a group of BSP workers who joined BJP today. We had no knowledge about his association with Shaheen Bagh issue,” Sharma said, news agency ANI reported. Reacting to the development, Gurjar said he will continue to work for the BJP even as the party cancelled his membership. In February, Gurjar had fired two rounds in the air at the Shaheen Bagh which was the epicenter of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests. The 24-hour sit-in that was mainly led by women lasted for more than three months. The peaceful agitation that became a pan-India template for anti-CAA protests was called off in March in the wake of coronavirus fears and subsequent lockdown. After opening the fire, Gurjar had also chanted “Jai Shri Ram” and said, “hamare desh me aur kisi ki nahi chalegi, sirf Hinduon ki chalegi (only Hindus shall have a say in our country, no one else). He was arrested and sent to police custody a day after the incident. Earlier today, the Congress hit out at the BJP after Gurjar’s induction in the saffron party and said where else “the criminals and rioters” would go. “Where else would the criminals and rioters go? He has chosen wisely. Now, wait for him to be made an office-bearer by the Bharatiya Gunda Party. BJP is dangerous for India!” Congress MP Ripun Bora said in a tweet.
