The Center on Friday said to a two-judge bench of the apex court that the Supreme Court may soon get 5 new judges.
Attorney General (AG) R.K. Venkataramani said that the new appointments would be cleared very soon.
Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Abhay S. Oka’s bench asked the Attorney General, who is representing the Centre, 5 names were sent in December for appointment as judges in the apex court and two names were sent recently and now it is the month of February, whether this record should be registered that notification will be issued?
The Attorney General replied that new appointments could happen very soon.
On December 13, 2022, the Collegium recommended 5 names for appointment as Supreme Court judges.
In which Justice Pankaj Mithal, Justice Sanjay Karol, Justice P.V. is there.
The names of Sanjay Kumar, Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah, and Justice Manoj Mishra were included. Their appointment has not yet been notified by the government.
The sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court is only 34, but currently 27 judges are working. Thus, there are 7 vacancies.
On January 31, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended elevation of Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice Arvind Kumar as judges in the apex court.
Justice Bindal is the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and Justice Kumar is the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court.
The top court was hearing a contempt petition filed by the Advocates’ Association of Bangalore against the Centre’s violation of the deadline for judicial appointments.
