Pigs are being culled as African swine flu infection has been detected in several places including Ramchandraghat in Khowai district of Tripura.
On the other hand according to the official notification , Animal Resource Development Department has banned the transportation of pigs from outside the state to Tripura. and through the state.
K Sashikumar, Special Secretary and Director of Animal Resources Development Department, informed this in a circular, saying that this ban has been issued for the welfare of pig farmers and to prevent infection among pigs.
According to the notification, no live or dead pig can be brought into the state from outside the state without the approval of the Animal Resources Development Department of the Tripura government. Only those wagons or rail consignments carrying pigs from outside will be allowed to enter the State in compliance with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, Transport of Animals Rules 96 of 2001 and Standard Operating Procedures. In that case, Animal Resource Development officials will verify the required health and vaccination status of imported pigs.
Therefore, the Director of Animal Resources Development should be notified at least 48 hours before the arrival of the consignment containing pigs at the port of entry.
Apart from pig rearing, pigs cannot be brought from outside for selling meat for commercial reasons. Moreover, the importer will have the health check of the pig at his own expense at the place where the pig will go, on the basis of advance notification of the Animal Resource Development Department.
Further mentioned, if any illegal / diseased consignment is found at the entrance of the State – the importer shall have the sole responsibility to remove the consignment of pigs from the State. Otherwise he shall at his own cost dispose of those pigs in accordance with the prevailing disease prevention act.
