Senior BJP MLA Biswabandhu Sen, who served as deputy speaker in the last assembly of Tripura, elected as the speaker of the state Assembly.
Election was held for this post on Friday, the first day of the state assembly session after the new government was sworn in earlier this month.
Sen wins the poll by 32/14 votes. He Defeated Congress and CPIM supported candidate Gopal Ch Roy.
The 69-year-old, who was with the Congress before jumping ship to the BJP in 2017, is a five-time MLA and has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) College.
Notably in the Tripura Assembly there are 31 MLAs of BJP and its ally IPFT have 1 MLA. On the other hand Opposition there are 11 CPIM MLAs and 3 MLAs of Congress.
Significantly there are 14 TIPRA Motha MLAs in the Assembly but they skips the poll of the speaker post.
MLAs of TIPRA Motha walked out of the Tripura Legislative Assembly protesting the seating arrangement on Friday.
