Voice Behind ISRO’s Launch Countdowns, N Valarmathi, Passed Away

Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) scientist N Valarmathi, who played an important role in India’s Moon mission Chandrayaan-3, passed away.

Valarmathi, a native of Ariyalur in Tamil Nadu, died of a heart attack in Chennai on Saturday evening.

She was the voice behind the countdown for ISRO’s mission launch.

The highly successful Chandrayaan-3, launched on July 14, proved to be the final countdown for her.

With one launch mission happening almost every month in the year 2023, the ISRO live stream is being closely watched by people in India and abroad.

As one watches these launches, the voices of the officials present at the time of the broadcast and the unique sound and manner of making their respective announcements (technically known as call-outs) become instantly recognizable.

One such voice, ISRO scientist Valaramathi is no more. Union Minister Rajib Chandrashekhar has also paid tribute to her.
