When Press Is The Enemy….

Journalists in Tripura are now facing threats from many sections of the society, including hooligans as well as the government . It is common for a journalist to be attacked, insulted or face excessive non-cooperation from the administration if there is a displeasing story published. Even on Saturday goons destroyed a daily newspaper openly in Rajarbagh, Udaipur and beats the hawkers. After Tripura Chief Minister, Biplab Kumar Deb issued open threat to media for criticizing his Government on its failure to manage Covid-19, at least 11 working journalists were attacked in various part of tripura. The assault on the media, at the instance of the Chief Minister, has already been written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and the Chairman, Press Council of India, seeking appropriate direction to the State Government by the journalists. But still no change in the situation. It’s a fact that media has given political parties the tools to reach large numbers of people and can inform them on key issues ranging from policies to elections. In theory, media should be seen as an enabler for democracy, having better-educated voters would lead to a more legitimate government. But when Press-media under attack than it can be easily understood what’s going on.
