A week after filing the complaint, the Delhi Police informed the Supreme Court on Friday, April 28, 2023, that it would file an FIR against Wrestling Federation of India President and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has been accused of sexual harassment and threats by seven women wrestlers, including a minor.
The Supreme Court is hearing a petition seeking registration of an FIR against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
During the hearing, the Delhi Police told the apex court that they will file an FIR on Friday. On this, Solicitor General SG Mehta, appearing for Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, said, now there is nothing left.
At the same time, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the wrestlers, gave a sealed envelope. He said, I demand a special task force. The main accused has 40 cases registered including section 302 (murder cases). I am also concerned about the safety of the petitioners.
Solicitor General said, leave it to the police commissioner..all concerns can be resolved.
Kapil Sibal said, it should be monitored by a retired judge.These are the girls who have played for the country here. You must agree with me.
Some of the top Indian wrestlers of the present time have been staging a sit-in at Jantar Mantar in the capital since last Sunday, 23 April 2023.
Top wrestlers include Tokyo 2020 medalist Bajrang Punia, Rio 2016 medalist Sakshi Malik and World Championships medalist Vinesh Phogat.
The wrestlers have demanded the arrest of Brij Bhushan. They have accused Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of threatening and sexually harassing women wrestlers.
Meanwhile, the Indian sports fraternity, including Olympic gold medalists Neeraj Chopra and Abhinav Bindra, came out in support of the wrestlers and demanded ‘swift action’ to ensure justice.
Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, besides Olympic gold medalist shooter Abhinav Bindra, boxer Nikhat Zareen, tennis star Sania Mirza, hockey player Rani Rampal, former cricketers Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, Madan Lal and Navjot Singh Sidhu supported Wrestlers.
