The swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected National Democratic Alliance government in Assam will be held on May 12 at the Veterinary Field in Khanapara, Chief Secretary Ravi Kota announced on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several Union ministers, chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from BJP-ruled states, along with representatives from different industries, are expected to attend the high-profile ceremony.
Ravi Kota said he chaired a detailed review meeting with the Assam Director General of Police and senior officials to assess preparations for the Prime Minister’s visit and the oath-taking event. Discussions focused on security arrangements, traffic management, venue readiness, protocol, and inter-departmental coordination.
In a post on X, Kota stressed the importance of seamless execution, strict adherence to protocol, and close coordination among all departments involved. He said all concerned agencies have been instructed to maintain the highest level of preparedness to ensure the ceremony is conducted smoothly and securely.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma submitted his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Wednesday. The Governor requested him to continue as caretaker chief minister until the formation of the new government.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has appointed Union minister J. P. Nadda as the central observer and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini as co-observer for the election of the BJP Legislature Party leader in Assam. The legislature party meeting is likely to take place on May 10.
The NDA secured a massive mandate in the recently concluded Assembly elections, returning to power in Assam for a third consecutive term by winning 102 out of 126 seats. The BJP won 82 seats, while allies Bodoland People's Front and Asom Gana Parishad secured 10 seats each.
When asked about the next chief minister, Sarma said the BJP Legislature Party would elect its leader in the presence of the central observers, after which NDA allies would jointly finalise the name.
“After that, NDA constituents will sit together and finalise the name. So we should wait for the process to complete,” Sarma said.
