Assam Verdict Reinforces BJP’s Structural Dominance

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is set to return to power in Assam for a third consecutive term, securing a commanding 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly and comfortably crossing the two-thirds majority mark.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the dominant force, winning 82 of the 90 seats it contested—enough to secure a majority on its own for the first time in the state. Its alliance partners, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF), contributed 10 seats each, consolidating the NDA’s strong tally.

This marks a significant jump for the BJP, which had won 60 seats each in the 2016 and 2021 elections, indicating a clear consolidation of its support base across regions.

Opposition Suffers Major Setback

The Opposition, led by the Indian National Congress, recorded one of its weakest performances in recent years. Contesting 99 seats, Congress managed to win only 19.

Its allies performed poorly:

  • All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF): 2 seats
  • Raijor Dal: 2 seats
  • All India Trinamool Congress: 1 seat

Other alliance partners, including Assam Jatiya Parishad, Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Autonomous State Demand Committee (APHLC), failed to open their accounts.

Key Leaders and Constituency Results

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma retained his stronghold in Jalukbari for a sixth consecutive term, defeating Congress candidate Bidisha Neog by a margin of 89,434 votes.

In a major blow to the Congress, state president Gaurav Gogoi lost the Jorhat seat to BJP’s Hitendranath Goswami by 23,181 votes.

Several senior BJP leaders and ministers retained their seats, including:

  • Ajanta Neog
  • Ranoj Pegu
  • Pijush Hazarika
  • Ashok Singhal

Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary won from Tamulpur, defeating Pramod Boro.

Among NDA allies:

  • AGP leaders Atul Bora and Keshab Mahanta retained Bokakhat and Kaliabor, respectively.
  • BPF candidates Charan Boro and Sewli Mohilary held key seats in the Bodoland region.

From the Opposition:

  • Congress winners included Wajed Ali Choudhury, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, and Rekibuddin Ahmed.
  • AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal won from Binnakandi.
  • Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi retained Sibsagar.

Several prominent Opposition leaders lost their seats, including Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia and Assam Jatiya Parishad president Lurinjyoti Saikia.

Low Women Representation

Women’s representation remained low, with only six of the 59 female candidates elected. Of these:

  • 4 were from BJP
  • 1 each from AGP, BPF, and Congress

Polling and Overall Verdict

Polling for all 126 constituencies was conducted in a single phase on April 9, with 722 candidates in the fray.

The results deliver a decisive mandate for the NDA, reinforcing its political dominance in Assam, while raising serious concerns for the Opposition over its shrinking electoral footprint in the state.
