Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday called on the Central Government to immediately deploy the PM CARES (pmcares) Fund to support people affected by severe floods and landslides across India's northeastern region. Alongside the appeal, he accused the BJP-led governments of failing to fulfil their promise of making the Northeast free from recurring flood disasters.
Kharge Expresses Solidarity With Flood-Affected Families
In a message posted on X, Kharge expressed deep sorrow over the deaths reported from the ongoing natural calamities in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Sikkim. He extended condolences to the bereaved families and assured that the Congress party stands firmly with every person displaced or affected by the floods and landslides.
Congress Questions BJP's Flood-Free Northeast Promise
The Congress chief alleged that the BJP's repeated assurances of eliminating the annual flood crisis in the Northeast have remained unfulfilled. He argued that every monsoon continues to bring widespread destruction because of inadequate preparedness, weak flood-control infrastructure and the absence of long-term mitigation strategies.

According to Kharge, the recurring disasters demonstrate the urgent need for a comprehensive national approach to flood management in the region.
PM CARES Fund Should Be Used Without Delay: Kharge
Calling the present situation an unprecedented humanitarian emergency, Kharge urged the Union Government not to treat it as a routine disaster response.
He demanded the immediate utilisation of the PM CARES Fund to ensure adequate financial compensation for victims, comprehensive rehabilitation packages and uninterrupted relief assistance for families that have lost homes, livelihoods and property.
Appeal For More Rescue Teams And Financial Assistance
The Congress president also urged the Centre to deploy additional rescue personnel, increase financial assistance and provide more relief materials to strengthen operations in flood-hit districts.
He stressed that damaged roads, bridges and public infrastructure must be restored quickly while ensuring that no affected family is left without government support.
Armed Forces, NDRF And SDRF Praised For Relief Operations
Kharge appreciated the efforts of the Armed Forces, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) for carrying out rescue and relief operations under challenging conditions.
However, he maintained that the scale of devastation demands a much stronger response from both the Central and state governments to prevent further loss of life and property.
Congress Workers Directed To Assist Victims Across Northeast
Kharge also instructed Congress leaders and grassroots workers to actively participate in relief efforts, help flood-affected communities and extend every possible assistance to victims until normalcy returns.
The Congress, he said, will continue to stand with the people of the Northeast during this difficult period.
Northeast Battles Severe Monsoon Floods
Heavy monsoon rains continue to trigger floods and landslides across several northeastern states, disrupting transportation, damaging infrastructure and forcing thousands of residents to seek safer locations. Authorities remain engaged in rescue, relief and restoration work as weather agencies warn that more rainfall could aggravate the situation in the coming days.
This developing humanitarian crisis has intensified political debate over disaster preparedness, flood management policies and the need for long-term infrastructure investments across the Northeast.
