The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) report on Assam’s 2026 Assembly polls reveals a mixed trend in the profile of the state’s 126 MLAs—declining criminal cases but sharply rising wealth.
Only 21 legislators (17%) have declared criminal cases, down from 34 (27%) in 2021. Among them, 19 MLAs (15%) face serious charges, compared to 22% in the previous assembly. These include three cases related to attempt to murder and two linked to crimes against women.
Party-wise, disparities are significant. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which won 82 seats, has seven MLAs (9%) with criminal cases. The Indian National Congress (Congress) reports a much higher proportion—nine out of 19 MLAs (47%). The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has two such MLAs, while the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) has one. In contrast, the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) stands out with all 10 of its MLAs free of criminal cases.
Serious criminal charges are spread across parties: seven each from BJP and Congress, both AIUDF MLAs, TMC’s lone legislator, one from Raijor Dal, and one from Asom Gana Parishad.
On the financial front, the data shows a steep rise in wealth. As many as 107 MLAs (85%) are crorepatis, up from 67% in 2021. The total declared assets of all MLAs stand at ₹1,112 crore, with an average of ₹8.82 crore per legislator—nearly double the previous ₹4.59 crore.
The BJP leads with 90% of its MLAs being crorepatis, followed by BPF (80%) and Congress (74%). All MLAs from AIUDF, TMC, and Raijor Dal have declared assets exceeding ₹1 crore.
In terms of average assets per MLA, AIUDF tops the list with ₹117.77 crore, followed by BPF (₹9.92 crore), BJP (₹7.50 crore), Congress (₹6.51 crore), AGP (₹2.81 crore), and Raijor Dal (₹1.54 crore).
The richest MLA is Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal with assets exceeding ₹226 crore. He is followed by Sewli Mohilary with ₹63 crore, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma with ₹35 crore.
Based on sworn affidavits, the ADR analysis highlights evolving trends in Assam’s political landscape—fewer MLAs with criminal backgrounds but a significant surge in wealth among elected representatives.
