Reaffirming the Tripura government's commitment to strengthening public healthcare, Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha on Saturday said the decision to prohibit private practice by government doctors at GBP Hospital and Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) was implemented only after extensive consultations with doctors and their associations.
Addressing the National Doctors' Day celebration organised by the Health and Family Welfare Department at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala, the Chief Minister said the long-pending government circular banning private practice had existed for years but was never enforced. His government decided to implement it to ensure greater transparency, accountability, and improved patient care across government hospitals.

"The decision was taken after discussions with the doctors' associations and considering their opinions. The objective is to provide better medical services to the people," Prof. Saha said.
Highlighting the importance of the medical profession, the Chief Minister urged doctors to follow the ideals of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, whose birth anniversary is observed as National Doctors' Day in India. He said doctors should uphold the highest standards of ethics, honesty, dedication and responsibility to earn the trust and respect of society.

Prof. Saha assured that the state government remains committed to providing every possible support and modern facilities to doctors serving in Tripura while expecting complete dedication towards public healthcare.
Government Focuses on Stronger Public Health System
The Chief Minister said the government is continuously investing in healthcare infrastructure across the state instead of limiting development to Agartala alone. District and sub-divisional hospitals are also being upgraded to improve access to quality treatment closer to people's homes.
He noted that referrals of patients outside Tripura have declined considerably due to improvements in medical facilities within the state. The government is also planning to introduce liver transplant and heart transplant services in the coming years, reducing dependence on hospitals outside the state.
Prof. Saha also stressed wider adoption of telemedicine and teleconsultation services to reduce treatment costs, minimise travel time and improve specialist healthcare access, particularly for patients living in remote areas.
PM-JAY Achieves Full Coverage in Tripura
The Chief Minister said Tripura has achieved 100 percent implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), reflecting the government's commitment to delivering affordable and accessible healthcare to every eligible citizen.
Recalling the contributions of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, Prof. Saha described him as an outstanding physician, visionary administrator and nation-builder whose principles continue to inspire generations of doctors.
Doctors Honoured on National Doctors' Day
Health and Family Welfare Secretary Kiran Gitte outlined the state's healthcare reforms and ongoing initiatives to strengthen medical services.

Ambedkar Teaching Hospital Principal Prof. Dr. Arindam Dutta, Agartala Government Dental College Principal Dr. Shalu Roy, senior officials and members of the medical fraternity.
Ten retired doctors were felicitated for their lifetime contribution to healthcare, while seven doctors received awards for excellence in various fields of medicine.
