Bangladesh is weighing a high-level diplomatic push, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman likely to visit India next month, Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman said on Tuesday. Speaking at a press briefing in Dhaka, he confirmed that discussions are ongoing to schedule the June visit, though no final dates have been set. A possible trip to China by the Prime Minister is also under consideration.
Meanwhile, Dr. Rahman himself is departing for China on a three-day official visit, during which he indicated that Dhaka would take “necessary measures” if any push-in incidents occur along the Bangladesh–India border.
On the agenda in China is the long-discussed Teesta Master Plan. Responding to questions, the Foreign Minister confirmed that the issue will feature in talks during his visit.
Officials said the visit follows an invitation from Beijing. Dr. Rahman will remain in Beijing until May 7 and is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Discussions are expected to cover regional and global developments, with particular focus on the Middle East, alongside broader issues of mutual interest.
The two sides will also explore alignment on development strategies and strategic priorities. As part of his itinerary, the Foreign Minister is set to meet Wang Huning, Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
Dr. Rahman is accompanied by Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir, BIDA Chairman Ashiq Chowdhury, and other senior officials.
