Arunachal Pradesh Floods: Helicopter Airlifts Food, Medicines to Villages Isolated by Landslides

The  Arunachal Pradesh government has launched an emergency helicopter relief operation to deliver food, medicines and other essential supplies to remote villages in Lower Siang district that remain cut off following devastating flash floods and landslides triggered by incessant monsoon rain.

Several Villages Remain Completely Cut Off

The week-long spell of heavy rainfall has caused widespread damage across the district, washing away bridges and blocking key road links. As a result, several villages—including Rotte, Rame, Loglu, Lipin, Mane, Tene, Sipu, Kakki, Kadu, Rina, Sido and Korang—have been completely disconnected from the rest of the state, leaving residents dependent on emergency assistance.

Government Launches Emergency Helicopter Mission

Responding to an urgent request from the Lower Siang Deputy Commissioner, the state government deployed a Skyone Airways Mi-172 helicopter to transport relief materials. The aircraft is scheduled to undertake multiple sorties from the Pasighat Advanced Landing Ground in East Siang district to the Koyu helipad, carrying emergency food supplies, medicines and other critical items for stranded communities.

According to officials from the Directorate of Civil Aviation, the helicopter departed Naharlagun on Saturday morning and reached the affected region to begin relief distribution.

Departments Coordinate Relief Distribution

Authorities said officials from the Civil Aviation Department, Disaster Management Authority, district administration and Food Safety Department have been stationed in Itanagar, Pasighat, Likabali and Nari to coordinate the unloading, transportation and distribution of relief materials. The coordinated effort aims to ensure that every isolated village receives essential supplies without delay despite difficult weather conditions.

Road Restoration Work Intensified

Meanwhile, the Lower Siang district administration has intensified restoration work on the Akajan-Likabali-Bame Road, one of Arunachal Pradesh's most important transport corridors. Heavy machinery has been deployed to clear landslide debris along the Likabali-Basar-Bame stretch.

Likabali Additional Deputy Commissioner Mokar Riba said a massive landslide near the Brahmaputra View point at Garu has severely affected road connectivity, making immediate clearance operations essential.

Traffic Restrictions Enforced for Public Safety

To facilitate restoration and ensure public safety, the administration has introduced time-specific traffic restrictions on the Akajan-Likabali-Bame Road. Officials warned that violations of the order would attract legal action under applicable laws while clearance operations continue.

Strategic Road Vital for Border Districts

The Akajan-Likabali-Bame Road is considered a strategic lifeline connecting seven border districts of Arunachal Pradesh. Apart from supporting civilian movement, the route plays a crucial role in enabling the transportation of security personnel, defence equipment and essential supplies to India's frontier regions.

Officials said relief operations, road restoration and damage assessment will continue on a war footing until connectivity is fully restored and all affected residents receive the assistance they need.
