Ahmedabad, also known as Amdavad, has been recommended by the Executive Board of Commonwealth Sport as the proposed host city for the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games, with a final decision expected at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26.
The Executive Board confirmed in a statement, “The Executive Board of Commonwealth Sport has today confirmed that it will recommend Amdavad, India, as the proposed host city for the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games.”
Ahmedabad, the key city in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat, boasts the world’s largest cricket stadium, a 130,000-seater arena named after the Prime Minister himself. India’s eyes are now set on an even bigger ambition, having submitted a formal letter of intent to the International Olympic Committee to host the 2036 Summer Olympics.
The city secured the nod over Abuja, Nigeria, drawing widespread celebrations across the country. India’s Home Minister Amit Shah hailed the announcement as “a day of immense joy and pride for India,” extending his “heartiest congratulations to every citizen of India on Commonwealth Association’s approval of India’s bid to host the Commonwealth Games 2030 in Ahmedabad.”
The Commonwealth Games movement faced uncertainty last year after Victoria, Australia, withdrew as the 2026 host due to cost concerns. Scotland’s Glasgow stepped in to host a slimmed-down edition, making it the second consecutive British city to stage the event following Birmingham in 2022.
The 2030 Games will be historic, marking the centenary of the inaugural Commonwealth Games held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930.
