3 Suspected Bangladeshi Cattle Thieves Lynched in Tripura Border Clash

Three suspected Bangladeshi cattle thieves were beaten to death by villagers in Tripura’s Khowai district on Wednesday following a violent confrontation near the Indo-Bangla border, police said. Two Indian villagers were also injured in the clash.

According to officials, the incident occurred in Bidyabil area under Champahowar police station limits. Two local villagers were working at a nearby rubber plantation when they spotted three Bangladeshi men hiding in the area. Upon being confronted, the suspects allegedly attacked the villagers with sharp weapons, injuring both.

The injured men returned to their village and informed others, prompting a group of villagers to rush to the spot. A violent altercation ensued, during which the three suspected cattle thieves were caught and beaten to death.

Police have recovered the bodies and sent them for postmortem examination. “An investigation is underway to identify the deceased, who are suspected to be from across the border. The situation in the area is under control,” a police official said.

Meanwhile, in a separate operation, the Border Security Force (BSF) and Tripura Police jointly raided the Karamtilla border area in South Tripura district, recovering clothes worth ₹8 lakh meant to be smuggled into Bangladesh.

A BSF spokesperson said that the force had also foiled several smuggling attempts in recent days, rescuing cattle and seizing contraband items valued at around ₹5 lakh. Tripura shares an 856-km-long, partially porous border with Bangladesh, which often sees incidents of smuggling and illegal crossings.
