40% Women Consider Themselves Unsafe: Frightening Statistics About Women's Safety In 'Nari 2025'

Kohima, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneshwar, Aizawl, Gangtok, Itanagar and Mumbai are the safest cities for women in the country.

Whereas, Patna, Jaipur, Faridabad, Delhi, Kolkata, Srinagar and Ranchi are the least safe cities for women.

This is revealed in the National Annual Report and Index on Women's Safety (NARI) 2025.

The report states that Kohima and other safest cities have greater equality for women, civic participation, better policing and women-friendly infrastructure.

However, the situation is just the opposite in cities like Patna and Jaipur.

This survey was conducted on 12,770 women from 31 cities. National Commission for Women (NMC) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar released its report on Thursday.

During survey 6 out of 10 women  said they are safe in their city, while 40% consider themselves 'not very safe' or 'unsafe'. Women feel less safe in public transport and places of visit at night.

86% of women in educational institutes feel safe only during the day. The feeling of safety reduces significantly at night or outside the campus. About 91% of women feel safe at the workplace.

The survey revealed that only 25% of women have confidence in effective action on security-related complaints.

69% of women said that existing security measures are adequate to some extent. Only 65% felt improvement in women's safety during 2023-2024.

7% of women said they experienced harassment in a public place in 2024. This figure doubled to 14% among girls under the age of 24. Public transport (29%) and neighbourhoods (38%) were reported as the most frequent places of harassment. Yet only 1 in 3 victims reported the incident.

The report said that 2 out of 3 women do not report harassment. This means that most incidents are not known to the NCRB. It called for linking crime data with surveys like NARI.
