5.1-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Assam, Tremors Felt Across Northeast

A strong earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale jolted Assam and several other parts of Northeast India early this morning, triggering panic among residents but causing no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the nodal agency of the Government of India for monitoring seismic activity, the earthquake occurred at 4:17 am. The epicentre was located near Morigaon district in central Assam, at a depth of approximately 50 kilometres.

The tremors were widely felt across Morigaon and adjoining districts, prompting many residents to rush out of their homes in fear, despite cold weather and dense fog prevailing at the time. The sudden shaking caused brief alarm but subsided within seconds.

Seismologists noted that the epicentre lies along the Kopili fault zone, a known seismically active region that has been responsible for several earthquakes in the past. The fault line continues to pose a significant geological risk to the area.

Although no loss of life or damage to property has been reported so far, authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Emergency services remain on alert as a precaution.

Northeast India, including Assam, falls under one of the country’s most sensitive seismic zones, making earthquakes a recurring concern. Experts continue to stress the importance of disaster preparedness and resilient infrastructure in the region.
