5.7 Magnitude Quake Hits Bangladesh, Six Dead

A powerful 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh at around 10:08 am (IST) on Friday, causing widespread panic, casualties, and structural damage across multiple districts. The epicenter was identified as Madhabadi in Narsingdi, barely 25 km from Dhaka, intensifying the impact in the capital and neighboring areas.

Six Dead, 200+ Injured

The quake caused severe destruction, claiming six lives and injuring more than 200 people across the country. The force of the tremor was strong enough to cause a ten-story building to tilt sideways, highlighting the quake’s intensity.

Stampede in Gazipur Factory Leaves 150 Injured

One of the worst incidents occurred in Shripur, Gazipur, where panic triggered a stampede at a multi-story building housing the textile factory Denimeck. Workers attempting to flee were injured in the rush, with over 150 taken to Sripur Upazila Health Center.

Workers later alleged that factory authorities delayed opening the main gate, sparking greater fear and injuries as people struggled to escape.

10-Month-Old Child Killed in Wall Collapse

In Rupganj, Narayanganj, a 10-month-old girl died when a roadside wall collapsed during the quake. According to the child's mother, she had run out of their house with her daughter after sensing the tremors, but the collapsing wall crushed the infant before help could arrive. The mother and a neighbor were injured and are currently under treatment.

Cricket Match Temporarily Suspended

The Bangladesh–Ireland international cricket match was also halted briefly as tremors shook the stadium, forcing players and officials to pause the game for safety.


Historical Context – Bangladesh’s Deadliest Quake in 1762

The largest earthquake ever recorded in the region occurred in 1762, known as the “Great Arakan Earthquake,” measuring 8.5 on the Richter scale. It triggered a 6–15 meter tsunami, devastating Chittagong and nearby regions. Historical records from the East India Company, Portuguese and Dutch traders, and regional folklore describe the disaster as wiping out large portions of the city “overnight.”


Tremors Felt in Kolkata

The quake’s effects were also felt across the border in Kolkata, where residents reported 20 seconds of shaking around 10:10 am. The tremor measured 5.2 in West Bengal, with effects recorded in Cooch Behar, Malda, Nadia, and South Dinajpur. No damage has been reported from India so far.
