A 7.5 magnitude earthquake has struck near Aomori Prefecture in Japan. The country's meteorological agency has issued a tsunami warning for Aomori, Iwate, and Hokkaido prefectures. The magnitude was previously reported at 7.6.
Small tsunami waves have begun arriving in Aomori, currently measuring up to 40 cm in height. The agency warned that even higher tsunamis could reach Japan's northeastern coast later, with waves up to 3 meters high.
The epicenter of the earthquake was 70 km off the coast of Japan at a depth of 50 km. Following the earthquake, power was cut off to 2,700 homes in Aomori Prefecture. Two fires were reported in Aomori City. One person was injured in a road collapse in Aomori Prefecture and two in Hokkaido.
Japan is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries. It sits on four major tectonic plates and is part of the Pacific Ocean's "Ring of Fire." Each year, it experiences approximately 1,500 earthquakes, most of which are mild.
An earthquake on Japan's Noto Island in 2024 killed nearly 600 people. In 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami killed more than 18,000 people.
The Japanese government has warned that earthquakes in Japan are expected to increase in intensity by 75-82 percent over the next 30 years. If this happens, 298,000 people could be killed and damages could reach $2 trillion (Rs 167 lakh crore).
