The forthcoming 2026 Assam Assembly elections have attracted a formidable field of 722 candidates, revealing pronounced disparities in the scale and nature of electoral contests across the state.
Data released by the Election Commission of Assam indicates that the constituencies of Algapur-Katlicherra (122) and Karimganj South (124) have each recorded the highest number of contestants at 15, pointing to intensely competitive, multi-polar electoral battles in the Barak Valley region.
In stark contrast, nine constituencies—Rangia, Jagiroad (SC), Hojai, Naduar, Jonai (ST), Doom Dooma, Mahmora, Teok, and Lakhipur—have reported only two candidates apiece, suggesting direct, head-to-head contests with limited electoral fragmentation.
The gender composition of the candidates further reflects a significant imbalance, with 663 male contenders compared to just 59 female candidates, and no representation under the ‘others’ category.
This uneven distribution of candidates underscores the heterogeneous political landscape of Assam, where certain constituencies are witnessing crowded and complex electoral dynamics, while others are set for straightforward contests as the state advances toward polling.
