Agartala-Kolkata Airfare Rs 17000: Tripura Opposition Leader Writes to Civil Aviation Minister

Opposition leader of Tripura Lagislative Assembly Jitendra Chowdhury has written a letter to Union Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia mentioning high price of Airfare.

He lamented the additional increase in air fares on the Agartala – Kolkata sector.

Chowdhury mentioned in the letter that it has already been noticed that the air fare in the Agartala-Kolkata sector has reached to Rs 17000. This fare is much higher than usual for a flight of only 327 km.

He said that the people of the state often have to use this air route for medical treatment and education. As a result of this increase in rent, common people are in trouble.

In this regard, Choudhury  demanded intervention of Union Aviation Minister  and appealed him to reduce the air fare.

In the latter Choudhury mentioned

I am taking this liberty to write you on behalf of the people of Tripura, particularly those who are economically dis-advantaged, but need to avail air travel under compulsion, particularly for medical care in the hospitals of metro cities and the students pursuing their higher education in different part of our country.

It has come to my attention that the current airfare for KOLKATA-AGARTALA Sector has reached an unprecedented high of Rs 17,000. This is particularly distressing given that many of our citizens rely on the more advanced healthcare facilities available in Kolkata and other major cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and New Delhi. The prohibitive cost of air travel is a significant obstacle for them, effectively denying access to essential health services.

The air distance between KOLKATA and AGARTALA is a mere 327 kilometres, making the current fare seem even more unreasonable. In light of the widespread poverty in our state, where many struggle to meet even basic needs, such costs are simply untenable.

I urge you to intervene in this matter and take immediate steps to make air travel more affordable for the residents of Tripura. A reduction in airfare would not only alleviate financial stress but also potentially save lives by facilitating access to critical healthcare and the other passengers of low income group.

I trust in your understanding and compassion for the plight of our citizens and look forward to a swift and favourable response.
