The black box of the Air India plane that crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12 has not yet been sent abroad for investigation. The central government has issued a stgatement regarding this.

The Centre on Thursday said that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) will decide where the plane's black box will be sent. This decision will be taken keeping in mind all technical, security and confidential aspects. At present, the AAIB investigation is ongoing.

Apart from this, a high level committee under the leadership of the Home Secretary is also investigating the accident, which will submit its report in three months.

The Centre said that two black box (CVR and DFDR) sets have been recovered from the plane.

The first set was recovered on June 13 and the second on June 16. This model comes with two black box sets.

Actually, Air India flight AI-171 bound for London crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12, soon after takeoff. 241 people on board were killed, while one passenger survived. A total of 270 people were killed in this incident.

Air India said – the plane was well maintained.
Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said that the crashed Dreamliner (Boeing 787-8) aircraft was completely fine. Its last major check was done in June 2023 and the next was scheduled in December 2025.

He said that the right engine was overhauled in March 2025 and the left engine was checked in April 2025.

why is it called a black box:

Many things are said about the name 'Black Box'. Some belief is that earlier its inside part used to be black, hence it got this name. The other opinion is that after the accident, its colour turns black due to burning in fire, hence people started calling it "Black Box".

6 important questions and answers related to the black box:

What does a black box look like?

A black box is actually orange in colour and does not look like a box. It can be of different shapes—such as round, cylindrical or dome-like. Its size is so large that it can be easily found in the debris of the plane.
How do we find the black box after an accident? If a plane falls into water, the black box's underwater beacon starts sending signals as soon as it touches water. If the accident happens on land, its bright orange color helps in finding it.

How does it protect data?

The black box is kept in the most secure part of the plane, usually the tail section. It is made of titanium or stainless steel. It can withstand temperatures of 1100 degrees Celsius and pressure at the depth of the sea. If it falls into water, it can send signals from a depth of up to 14,000 feet.

Can it take time to find the black box?

In some accidents, it takes a long time to find the black box. Sometimes it may also happen that it is not found. Example: - Sriwijaya Air Jet (9 January 2021): Found in about 3 days. - Air France 447 (1 June 2009): Found after 699 days. - Malaysia Airlines 370 (8 March 2014): Not found yet.

Where is the investigation done in India?

Recently DFDR & CVR lab has been started in Delhi, where data can be extracted and analyzed from the black box. This black box will also be investigated here.
