Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Two Cabin Crew From Manipur, killed

Two cabin crew members from Manipur have been killed in the horrific crash of an Air India flight in Ahmedabad.

They are Nganthoi Sharma Kambrailatpam and Lamnuthem Singhson.

The tragic plane crash took place near Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon.

Air India flight AI171 was flying from Ahmedabad to London's Gatwick. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:38 pm.

There were a total of 242 passengers and crew on board, including 169 Indians, 53 Britons, one Canadian and seven Portuguese nationals.

The plane crashed near the BJ Medical College hostel near the airport, where many medical students were present as it was lunch time.

The aircraft was being flown by Captain Sumit Sabharwal, a line training captain with over 8,200 hours of flying experience. He was assisted by First Officer Clive Kunder, who has 1,100 hours of flying experience.

The cabin crew, besides Nganthoi and Lamnuthem, included Shraddha Dhawan, Aparna Mahadik, Sainita Chakraborty, Deepak Pathak, Maithili Patil, Irfan Sheikh, Roshni Sanghare Rajendra and Manisha Thapa.

Following the incident, airport authorities said that all flight operations at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport have been temporarily suspended until further notice.

Air India has blacked out its social media profiles as a mark of mourning — the first time since the deadly plane crash in Kozhikode in 2020. Air India has launched a helpline (1800 5691 444) to help family members trace their loved ones.

Authorities said an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident.
