All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Rafiqul Islam has condemned Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's recent "shoot-at-sight" directive in Dhubri district, describing it as a disproportionate measure that unfairly targets a specific community and could exacerbate communal tensions in the state.
The unrest in Dhubri was triggered by the discovery of beef near a place of worship during Eid celebrations on June 7. In response, the Assam government imposed a shoot-on-sight order after 6 PM to quell the disturbances. Over 40 individuals have been arrested, and the Rapid Action Force and CRPF have been deployed to restore order.
Islam emphasized that while the disturbance during Eid was condemnable, the government's response should be balanced and impartial. He criticized the lack of a high-level inquiry into the incidents and accused the state government of selectively targeting the Muslim community. Islam also alleged that Chief Minister Sarma's actions have escalated the situation rather than de-escalating it.
In a broader context, Chief Minister Sarma has faced criticism from opposition leaders for his remarks about the "Miya" Muslim community, with some accusing him of promoting divisive politics. Opposition leaders have filed police complaints alleging that Sarma's comments could incite communal unrest.
The situation in Dhubri remains tense as authorities continue efforts to maintain peace and prevent further escalation.
