'All Eyes On Rafah' Trends As 45 People Killed in Israel Attack

Algeria introduced a draft resolution at the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, ordering Israel to immediately halt military action in Rafah and calling on all parties to respect the ceasefire.

There has also been a demand for the immediate release of hostages held by Hamas. A vote on this is expected soon.

After a closed-door meeting of the 15-member UN Security Council on Gaza, Algeria's UN ambassador Amar Bendjama said the move was aimed at stopping the killing in Rafah.

The resolution will need at least nine votes in support to pass. It is also necessary that none of the US, Britain, France, Russia and China veto it.

So far, the US has vetoed three resolutions brought on the Gaza war.

The US ambassador said that we are looking into the matter and will respond in due course. The proposed draft condemns the indiscriminate targeting of civilians, including women and children, and civilian infrastructure.

The Council's demand to all parties to abide by international law requiring the protection of civilians has been reiterated.
