The US is shifting military resources, including warships, to West Asia amid fears of retaliation from the Gulf country after Israel's attack on Iranian bases, two US officials said on Saturday
The Navy has directed the destroyer USS Thomas Hudner to move to the eastern Mediterranean and another destroyer has also been directed to move so that they can be available if requested by the White House.
President Donald Trump is meeting with the heads of his National Security Council to discuss the situation, an official said.
Both US officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the information has not yet been made public.
Military in the region have been taking precautionary measures for several days, including voluntary withdrawal of dependents of troops from regional military bases, to protect those personnel in case of an attack and massive retaliation from Iran.
There are usually about 30,000 US troops deployed in West Asia.
However, since October last year, this number has increased to 43,000 amid the ongoing tension between Israel and Iran and the frequent attacks on commercial and military ships in the Red Sea by Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.
Hudner is an Arleigh Burke class destroyer capable of defending against ballistic missiles.
US Navy destroyers fired several anti-missile weapons to protect the Jewish country after Iran fired more than 200 missiles at Israel on October 1, 2024.
