A joint regional official language conference will be held on February 20 at the Hapaniya International Fair premises in Agartala to review the progressive use of Hindi in the administrative work of the Central Government and to assess the implementation of the Official Language Policy.
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the conference at 2 pm.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Secretary of the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ansuli Arya, said that as per the Constitution, Hindi in Devanagari script is the official language of the Centre.
To ensure effective implementation of this constitutional provision, the Department of Official Language was set up as an independent department under the Ministry of Home Affairs on June 26, 1975.
She informed that the department organizes four regional conferences every financial year to evaluate the progress of the Official Language Policy across different regions.
The first conference for the financial year 2025–26 was held in Indore, and the second joint regional conference will now take place in Agartala with participation from the Eastern, North Eastern and Northern regions.
Around 3,000 senior officials and representatives from central government ministries, public sector banks and state-owned enterprises are expected to attend.

Participants will include representatives from eastern states such as West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar and Jharkhand; northeastern states including Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim; and northern states such as Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
During the inaugural session, various central departments, banks and organizations will be conferred awards for excellence in the implementation of Rajbhasha.
The ‘Nagar Rajbhasha Samman’ will also be presented to selected Nagar Rajbhasha Karyanvayan Samitis for outstanding performance. A total of 80 awards will be distributed based on quarterly progress reports submitted through the information management system.
The special issue of Rajbhasha Bharati, a publication of the department, will be unveiled at the event. Two books — Indian Languages and Rajbhasha Hindi: Timeless Achievements and Amritavani Sanskrit’s Motivational Verses — will also be released.
Officials said book publishing is being used as a key medium to connect the younger generation with the country’s linguistic heritage.
The Secretary further stated that under the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a multilingual translation system named ‘Bharati’ has been developed to strengthen harmony among Indian languages. The platform aims to bridge the gap between Hindi and the languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and to promote the use of regional languages alongside Hindi.
Exhibition stalls by various banks, literary institutions and organizations will be set up at the venue to showcase new initiatives related to the official language.
To promote healthy living among officials, a yoga session featuring simple asanas, pranayama and stress management exercises will be held at the International Indoor Exhibition Centre in Hapaniya from 4 pm on the same day.
Officials emphasized that while Hindi remains an important symbol of India’s cultural heritage, the broader objective of the initiative is to foster an inclusive cultural outlook that respects the country’s multilingual legacy. They called for active participation and cooperation to fulfil the constitutional mandate of the Official Language Policy.
