Angel Chakma Murder: BJP Leader Slams Investigation

Former Rajya Sabha MP and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Tarun Vijay has called for a high-level, independent investigation into the brutal killing of Angel Chakma in Uttarakhand, while demanding capital punishment for those responsible.

Tarun Vijay on Thursday visited the ancestral residence of the deceased at Machmara in Tripura’s Unakoti district, where he met the grieving family and expressed solidarity with Angel’s parents.

Describing the incident as an “unpardonable crime,” the BJP leader asserted that such acts strike at the very core of India’s unity. “We are all blood brothers—one India, one nation,” he said, emphasising that violence against citizens from the Northeast cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.

Sharing the anguish of the bereaved family, Vijay remarked that the pain of losing a child is beyond comprehension. “No one but parents can truly understand the lifelong grief caused by such a loss,” he said.

Raising serious concerns over the manner in which the case is being handled, Vijay expressed dissatisfaction with the Uttarakhand government’s investigation. He argued that the probe should have been immediately transferred to a higher, independent authority to ensure impartiality and justice.

According to reports, a day before the fatal stabbing on December 8, Angel Chakma was allegedly involved in a heated altercation with the owner of his rented accommodation. It is claimed that the house owner forced Angel to vacate the premises the same night, despite his repeated requests to stay. Further allegations suggest that Angel’s father was compelled to pay ₹4,000 as compensation for a damaged door. Despite these details being shared with the Uttarakhand Police, they were allegedly overlooked during the initial investigation.

Reacting strongly, Tarun Vijay said the role of the house owner had been completely ignored and assured the family that he would pursue the matter to ensure all involved are brought under scrutiny.

He categorically rejected any suggestion of a spontaneous altercation, stating that the assailants arrived with a premeditated intent to kill. “They were armed, prepared, and ruthless. This was no fight—it was a planned murder,” he said.

Lamenting the loss of a promising young life, Vijay added, “Because of them, a bright student with a future ahead of him has been silenced forever.”

Questioning the state’s commitment to justice, he said, “If justice cannot be delivered, then the Constitution and the rule of law lose their meaning. Who will answer the parents as to why their son has not returned?”

Meanwhile, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by SP (Rural) Pankaj Gairola has been constituted to probe the case.

Highlighting the broader national context, Tarun Vijay underscored the significance of the Northeast, describing it as India’s most precious jewel. “The nation remains incomplete without the Northeast, and any injustice to its people is an injustice to India itself,” he said.
