Army Takes Over: Sheikh Hasina Govt Overthrown In Bangladesh

Sheikh Hasina government has been overthrown in Bangladesh. The student protests have taken a violent turn due to which Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has had to resign and now she has left the country.

Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman has said that an interim government is being formed.

Bangladesh's leading newspaper 'Dhaka Tribune' has written in a report citing sources that Sheikh Hasina has left for India with her younger sister Sheikh Rehana.

Meanwhile, the local media of Bangladesh is saying that Hasina has left for India. News agency AFP has said that Hasina has reached a safe place.

The newspaper wrote in its report, 'Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left Bangabhaban (Prime Minister's residence) on Monday at around 2:30 pm in a military helicopter to a safe place with her sister Sheikh Rehana. According to sources, she is going to West Bengal, India.'

Meanwhile, according to news agency AFP, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana have reached a 'safe place'.

The Bangladeshi newspaper reported that Sheikh Hasina wanted to record a farewell speech before leaving the country. However, the situation became such that she had to flee the country in the middle of preparations for the speech.

The Bangladeshi newspaper report said, 'But the situation became such that she did not get the opportunity to record the speech and had to suddenly leave the country.'

The army gave a 45-minute ultimatum to leave the country

Meanwhile, Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman has addressed the nation. In his address, while calling for stopping the violence, he has said that justice will be done to those who died in the violence.

Appealing to the protesters to maintain peace, he said, "We will fulfill your demands, stay away from conflict. We have spoken to the leaders of all the parties today."

The anger of the protesters towards Sheikh Hasina can be gauged from the fact that they attacked the statue of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujiburahman, known as the father of the nation of Bangladesh.

In a video that surfaced from Bangladesh, protesters are seen climbing Bangabandhu's statue and using hammers. Hasina is the daughter of Sheikh Mujiburahman.

More than 100 people were killed in violence between students and government supporters in Bangladesh on Sunday. On Monday, 5 August, once again a large number of protesters took to the streets amid curfew.

Meanwhile, violence broke out between the police and the students. Pulice fired tear gas shells and stun grenades to disperse the crowd. After this, the protesters became so furious that they entered the PM's residence and committed arson and vandalism there.

Later in a press conference  army chief's statement has come out on the deepening political crisis after Sheikh Hasina's resignation from the post of PM.

He said that now the interim government will run the country.

He said that after Sheikh Hasina's resignation, a meeting was held in which representatives of the main political parties were present in the discussion with the army
