The Asia Cup 2025 trophy controversy has deepened after the Indian cricket team returned home without the championship trophy despite defeating Pakistan in the final on September 28.
ACC president and PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s Home Minister, attempted to personally present the trophy to Team India, but the players declined to accept it from him. Naqvi later took the trophy to his hotel instead of handing it over through another ACC official.
At the Asian Cricket Council’s Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla strongly objected, stating that the trophy “must be formally presented to the winning team.” BCCI officials also warned that impeachment proceedings could be initiated against Naqvi for mishandling his responsibilities.
Naqvi, however, defended himself, saying he had never apologized to the BCCI and that he was “ready to present the trophy then and ready now.” Posting on X, he added: “The Indian team can come to my office and collect the Asia Cup trophy.”
The matter will now be discussed further among ACC’s Test-playing members – India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan – before a final decision is taken.
This controversy follows earlier flashpoints in the tournament, including a handshake dispute between captains, Pakistan’s delayed arrival for a match, and pacer Haris Rauf’s controversial “6-0” gesture towards Indian fans.
