Assam Awaits PM Modi’s Significant Two-Day Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to Assam beginning December 20 is expected to be significant not just politically, but also symbolically and developmentally, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on December 18 after reviewing preparations at the BJP state headquarters in Guwahati.

Addressing the media, Sarma stressed that the Prime Minister’s visit should not be viewed through an electoral lens, even as the state prepares for Assembly elections early next year. “The Prime Minister has been elected to lead the nation. His programmes in Assam go far beyond politics and carry deep symbolic and developmental importance,” he said.

The Prime Minister will arrive in Guwahati on Saturday afternoon and begin his engagements by unveiling an 80-foot statue of Assam’s first Chief Minister Gopinath Bordoloi. Bordoloi, a senior Congress leader, was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. Modi will also inaugurate the newly constructed ₹4,000-crore terminal at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport and address a public gathering at the venue.

Following this, the Prime Minister will participate in a roadshow en route to the BJP state headquarters at Bashishta, where he will interact with party workers. Calling it a historic moment, Sarma noted that this would be the first time a sitting Prime Minister visits a BJP office in Assam.

PM Modi will stay overnight at the state guest house in Koinadhora, Khanapara. On Sunday, he is scheduled to hold an interactive session with 25 meritorious students under his flagship ‘Pariksha Pe Charcha’ initiative. The event will take place aboard the cruise vessel Charaideo while sailing on the Brahmaputra.

Recalling the Prime Minister’s fondness for the river, Sarma said a similar plan during the visit of the Japanese Prime Minister years ago had to be cancelled due to logistical issues. He expressed confidence that Modi’s Brahmaputra cruise would give a major boost to river tourism, just as his earlier visit to Kaziranga had led to a surge in tourist arrivals.

Later in the day, the Prime Minister will pay tribute at the newly constructed Swahid Smarak Kshetra, commemorating the 860 martyrs of the Assam Movement. He will then travel to Dibrugarh and Namrup, where he will lay the foundation stone of a ₹12,000-crore ammonia-urea fertiliser plant.

Describing the project as a major catalyst for Assam’s economic growth, Sarma said the Prime Minister’s final engagement in Namrup would mark a substantial push towards industrial development in the state before he returns to New Delhi.
