The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Himanta Biswa Sarma government in Assam has been constantly accused of targeting the Muslims of the state. Recently, in the communal violence that broke out in Dhubri after banned meat was found on the day after Bakrid, questions have been raised about one-sided action and pushing a particular community into 'no man's land' by targeting it under D-Voters.
Now the Himanta Biswa Sarma government has allegedly taken unilateral action and demolished the houses of Muslims in Assam's Goalpara town. This action took place on Monday (16 June). According to officials, about 45 percent of the houses in the Hasila Beel area of Goalpara were demolished because they were built by encroaching. Not only this, the demolition process is going on here even today on Tuesday (17 June).
According to the information received, Hasila Beel area of Gwalpara district of Assam is considered to be Muslim-dominated and 700 families live here. Almost all of them are Muslims. Today, on Tuesday, at around 6 am, the district administration's T15 bulldozer reached the spot and farms, barns and properties spread over 16 thousand bighas were destroyed.
It is natural to raise questions on this action because it is the rainy season and during this season flood-like situations occur in Assam. It is being told that there are only two or three houses of non-Muslims in this area. A few days ago, a notice was issued by the administration to the affected people, in which it was mentioned that this place is illegal and bulldozer action will be taken. Today, when the bulldozer suddenly reached Hasila Beel, people were stunned. Most of the affected people do not have any other place to live.
It is the rainy season in Assam. Flood-like conditions are already prevailing in the entire Assam. In such a situation, the question arises that how will the affected families live under the open sky during this time. A large number of the affected are women, elderly and children. Children and elderly suffer more due to changing weather. Its effect has also started to be seen.
More than 700 Bengali-speaking Muslim families live at this place in Goalpara, who were evicted from about 1600 bighas of land. The district administration claimed that it had issued eviction notices to the villagers in 2023 and 2024, directing them to vacate the 'wetland area'. The District Commissioner of Goalpara said that 45 percent of the houses built on the allegedly encroached land in the Hasila Beel area were demolished on Monday itself.
Many residents left the village with their belongings, while the remaining families have requested the district administration to rehabilitate them. Goalpara East MLA A.K. Rashid Alam also wrote a letter to the District Commissioner demanding rehabilitation of the people being evicted. He also claimed that these families have been living in the area for about 70 years.
Aminul Haque Chowdhury, the local leader of All Assam Minority Student Union, made serious allegations against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He said that the Chief Minister of Assam is constantly committing various kinds of atrocities on Muslims. Sometimes detention camps, sometimes bulldozer action is being taken. Now Muslim families living here for years have been made homeless by running bulldozers.
Aminul Haque Chowdhury said, "Bulldozers are being continuously used on houses, farms, barns and religious places. He said that Hindus and Muslims should raise their voices together against this oppression." He said that it is not right to commit such oppression on any community. This bulldozer action will continue not only today but tomorrow as well and it is difficult to say for how many days it will continue in the future.
