Assam By-Election: Nomination Process Ends. 38 Candidates Filed Nomination Papers

The nomination process for by-elections on five assembly seats in Assam has ended. A total of 38 candidates have filed nomination papers.
The nomination process ended on Friday. On the last day, the highest number of 24 candidates filed their nominations. According to the official statement, on Friday, three candidates from Dholai, one candidate from Sidli, five candidates from Bongaigaon, 12 candidates from Samaguri and three candidates from Behali filed nomination papers.
The major candidates so far include BJP's Diplo Ranjan Sharma in Samaguri, AGP's Diptimoy Choudhury (who is the wife of eight-time party MLA Phanibhushan Choudhury) in Bongaigaon, Congress' Jayta Bora in Behali and Bodo People's Front's Sudho Kumar Basumatary in Sidli.
The scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on October 28 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 30.
The BJP is contesting in three of the five constituencies - Behali, Samgudi and Dholai, while leaving Bongaigaon and Sidli for its alliance partners AGP and UPPL.
The Congress is contesting in all the five constituencies. All these by-elections are being held on seats that fell vacant after sitting MLAs won the Lok Sabha elections.
Congress's Samgudi candidate Tanjil Hussain is the son of sitting MLA Rakibul Hussain, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from Dhubri parliamentary constituency with a record margin of 10 lakh votes. Due to this the seat fell vacant.
BJP MLA from Dholai and former cabinet minister Parimal Suklabaidya became MP after winning the Lok Sabha elections from Silchar parliamentary constituency. Due to this, by-elections are being held here.
While BJP's Ranjit Dutta was MLA from Behali, who is now MP from Sonitpur Lok Sabha. Similarly, NDA alliance partner AGP's sitting MLA Phanibhushan Choudhury became Barpeta Lok Sabha MP while Sidli's UPPL MLA Jayanta Basumatari became MP after being elected from Kokrajhar parliamentary constituency.
Voting will be held on these five seats on November 13 and counting of votes will be done on November 23.
